Dr Mari Nygård, the head of the Human Papillomavirus-related Epidemiological Research Unit of the Cancer Registry of Norway, visited the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) on 12 November 2019. She met with IARC Director Dr Elisabete Weiderpass and gave a presentation to IARC personnel titled “Towards personalized cancer prevention: the Digital Cancer Precision Prevention Initiative”.
Dr Nygård’s presentation provided an overview of cervical cancer prevention efforts in Norway, with a focus on newly developed methodology for improved prediction of screening outcomes. Models that use individual screening histories and covariate data show potential to improve strategies for cancer screening programmes by personalizing recommended screening intervals. The ultimate goal is to improve cancer screening outcomes and implement personalized cancer prevention to complement existing population-based approaches.
